A PROPOSAL FOR A DOCUMENTARY- Be the change that you want to see.
                                                 PRESENTED BY ALPINA MUHATI 09-0848
INTRODUCTION
Since multi-party politics began in Kenya, elections have been ethnically divisive and violent. Hundreds died in 1992 and again in 1997 before 2007 exploded. Violence has long been a feature of political life but what happened in 2007, went way beyond anything Kenyans had seen before. If nothing is done, we can predict that next time will make 2007 look like chicken feed.
After the 2007 post election violence, what next? Many initiatives were embarked on, one such initiative is The Brand Kenya Board, a state cooperation that was charged with the responsibility of identifying and refining the key elements in Kenya, that contribute positively to the image and reputation of the Nation. Their main goal is to enhance these elements and create an authentic, credible brand for the country that establishes our uniqueness in the global arena. One of their major functions is to unite Kenyans and provide them with positive information about the country in order to promote patriotism and national pride.

From 2007, there has been a build-up of activities as Kenyans near the elections .To avoid going back to where we have come from as a country, this documentary proposes to discuss some of these activities including the wall painting incidents, zebra crossing paintings that are being done by a group of youths, the issue of e-mail surveillance ,the ICC 4  and the exact election date .We will also discuss what Brand Kenya has done so far, to ensure that we don’t go back from where we came from in 2007.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
There are many questions regarding the safety of Kenyans .Different people have different opinions regarding different political issues. Another concern is that people are interpreting different events and activities as individuals, so they end up having a different meaning.
OBJECTIVES
From the discussions, I hope to achieve the following goals:
1)      My main objective is to show my audience that Kenya as a county is bigger than a county, bigger than a tribe and much bigger than any individual.
2)      To encourage the youth to be the change they want to see.
3)      Get the different perspectives that the youths hold about the topic.
PLAN OF ACTION
This section presents my plan for obtaining the objectives discussed in the previous section. For the first objective, I plan to interview at least two board members from Brand Kenya; their perspective will help me achieve my objective.
For the second goal, I will collect different opinions (sound bites) from different University Students, including students from Daystar Valley road campus and Athi River campus. The reason behind this is because the youth make up the better part of the Kenyan population, and so the decisions we are making now will affect the generations to come. Another reason is also because my target audiences are listeners of Shine 103.1 FM, most of them being youths.
From the interviews and the sound bites, I will be able to get the different perspectives that we the youth hold regarding the political situation at hand.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, the documentary be the change that you want to see seeks to entice the audiences of Shine 103.1 to be the change that they want to see in Kenya. The change starts with a change of attitude, which is what Brand Kenya has been working on, and change of attitude starts with an individual. If we don’t take that step now to define the good we want for our county, we are the same individuals who will suffer years to come.
As Sophia Loren says, there is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age.

PROGRAMME CRITIQUES : BBC SPORTSWORLD VS CAPITAL FM SATURDAY MUSIC AND SPORTS

I chose to critique two sports shows: BBC SPORTSWORLD VS CAPITAL FM SATURDAY MUSIC AND SPORTS. This is because the favored my timing. The BBC one aired on saturday and sunday, so i would listen to the sunday edition and the saturday edition of the Capital music and sports show.

28TH AUGUST 2010
The BBC show I will be covering is sports world. Sports world is the flagship weekend sports programme from BBC World Service Radio that is broadcast Saturday 1400-1700 GMT and Sunday 1600-1800 GMT. It covers international sporting events. There are live discussions, interviews and commentaries. Features and in depth analysis of sporting events and the factors that run behind the scene in the sporting world
Sports world has three presenters, Russell fuller, Richard Connelly and lee James. The show is produced in London Britain. The presenters of the show are all of British origin. The show has interviews and features and very little music. If there is music it usually has some importance to the discussion. The show is simply a sports oriented one. The local radio station program that I will be critiquing is the Saturday music and sports show on capital fm. It is aired every Saturday afternoon from two to four. It has three presenters Eddie, Phillip and James and at times has visitor presenters who come in to comment on the show. The show has a rather laid back approach and is more like a discussion between the presenters on happenings of the sports world. The presenters give their opinions on various matters. Occasionally they have interviews with sports personalities from Kenya and they also play interviews that have been recorded by other stations.

4TH SEPTEMBER 2010
In the BBC show the presenters all have interest in sports however it is very clear that they have varying passions for certain sports. This I believe creates a better program as each is ready to represent their sport. The presenters are also strong willed and give their facts point blank in the face of discussion. The presenters rarely give an opinion rather they get opinions from their reporters in the field or off of the guests they interview. The story line is well scripted and clear. It has continuity as they link discussions had in previous shows to the current one. Topics are extensively researched and facts given are at times rather unique. The audio qualities in this show are exceptional. Be it in the field or in the studio. There was barely ever any sound distortion and sound effects even those from an obviously crowded region were clear.

The local show program is produced and presented in Kenya although once in a while as mentioned before they have guest hosts who may not be Kenyan. They have a dj who provides the music mixes which are of the trance, house and techno genre. The worldview is secular. The idea is original as the whole show is more like a spirited discussion between friends who have a mutual love for sports.

11TH SEPTEMBER 2010
In that show the capital sports show had interviews with sports personalities from Kenya and they also played interviews that have been recorded by other stations. They covered topics from local football in Kenya to African sporting events and international sporting events. They however had some almost permanent fixtures which are covered during every show. These included international football, i.e La liga, the world cup, European football. Fast racing and rugby was also not left out

One thing that I noticed is that they would have had a good script to follow, at some point they seemed way ward. If I were the producer of this show I would make sure all details of the show are well researched before it airs. I do understand the fact that it is a spontaneous discussion but having all the facts would make it even better.

18TH SEPTEMBER 2010
As I was reviewing the shows, I noticed that these two programs have almost similar aspects in that both have three presenters and cover both local and international sports. However sports world (BBC) rarely plays any music and it is not part of their line up whereas the name Saturday music and sports says it all.
The approaches towards broadcasting are also very different. In sports world one gets the impression of professionalism and following rules to the letter while in Saturday music and sports there is amore relaxed attitude.

25TH SEPTEMBER 2010
On sports world. The presenters had a discussion over where the la liga title would end up. They discussed this with a reporter who was on site preparing to cover a crucial match between Barcelona and Real Madrid. The audio qualities of the show were of high quality. They were even throughout both discussions in the studio and the discussion with the presenter who at the time was in a different continent. There was use of sound effects that represented a stadium with people milling in. there was also a moment where spains national anthem was played. The story line was clean and simple with details well explained such that even a non football enthusiast would understand and follow.

2ND OCTOBER 2010
The show today is rather leaning towards materialism as they discuss the cost of getting to watch football matches of importance. The discussion veers towards the world cup in south Africa and costs of traveling, accommodation and match tickets.
The discussion was very formal and serious. In the Saturday music and sports show there was a discussion on local football teams’ sofapaka and Ulinzi. As well as the national rugby team. There were also mentions on cricket, athletics and financial problems affecting athletics Kenya. The attitude was relaxed, with a lot of speculation and laughter. A sports enthusiast would rather enjoy this as one feels like they are in a conversation.

9TH OCTOBER 2010
In the capital music and sports I really got the feeling that the show was not scripted and the presenters did not have all the information that would have been helpful. One required prior knowledge of certain names and events to understand what they were talking about. Audio levels were good however there was a bit of a problem with the connection by phone to one of their presenters who was covering a local football game.

16TH OCTOBER 2010

Today’s show on BBC sports world covered cricket in India and England. There was also a feature on Pakistan’s cricket drama. There was also a discussion on the up coming match between Manchester united and Bayern Munich. They provided facts on previous matches played between the two teams. There was al element of humor in the show as one of the presenters commented on peoples expectations for the match. There was a discussion with a listener via a phone in on the topic of the match. Audio quality was very good with even the phone in session having the same audio levels as the show. the show covered both local and international aspects as it featured a tennis game that was going to be held right there in London

On the Saturday Music and sports show the discussion started off with Christiano Ronaldo, a football player who earned six red cards. There was also a discussion on the Tour de France, an international cycling event. There was an interview segment where a local rider commented on the results and what the future was likely to bring. The audio levels were good. The interview was clear and well structured. However again facts necessary were not properly gathered and a presenter had to promise to go out and research the question. There is good connection between the music and the discussion from the presenters and one is left with an upbeat feeling.

23RD OCTOBER 20101

On sportsworld today they discussed games played at the common wealth games and gave a brief history of bob sledding. In addition they talked about the progress of golf. They interviewed a top ranked golf player. The audio quality was particularly good though I am not sure that had to do with the station or the fact that I was in a different geographical position from that which I usually listen to the show from. The interview was rather long and as a presenter I probably would have split it into two and thrown in a commercial.

30TH OCTOBER 20101
On Saturday music and sports there were various topics. These included a discussion on the Kenya rugby federation; the local impala floodlights (Floodies), international tennis and athletes from china. The audio quality was good however there were a few seconds of dead air, there was no apology or acknowledgement of the incident which I felt was necessary. It is however possible that they were unaware and were later informed. The music was the same however it has become repetitive. Listeners phoned in to comment on the discussion and afterwards a presenter made a comment that was in rather poor taste. As a producer this wouldn’t be allowed as everyone should be entitled to their opinion.

OVERALL CRITIQUE
All these two programmes are magazine programmes as they have different segments that talk about different sports and they use different radio formats for the whole show.

They were both very incisive and informative. The shows though the same talking about sports, were mainly focusing on different target audiences: Sports world BBC – on the whole world thus incorporating all sports in there line ups, and Capital sports and music focusing on Kenya, and thus sports was more covered as all Kenyans can realte to it, be it the local league, European league or la liga.

The sports world show dint play much music as it is a semi-talk radio. The capital music and sports as the name suggest even had a DJ in studio to spin the music.

BBC was more credible and believable as the had reporters on the ground in all major continents where any major sporting event was taking place. The capital music and sports heavily relied on the web to get most of its info and hear say.

The BBC show also had clear segments such as spotsworld have your say where they involved the world in discussuions posed by a listener In a certain part of the world. They also have segments such as ,inside the premiere league, world cricket, fast track etc
I really enjoyed listening to the sports shows, and now I have become a lover of our world sports, through BBC sports world show and I shall continue to listen to it beyond the class critique.

Final Project Transmission

I believe you had a peaceful new year transition. Now it is back to excellence in journalism.

If your group was instructed by the Shine Programme Manager to revise your show before it could be aired on Shine, make sure you do so with immediate effect.

The revised show must meet broadcast standards and make sure it is aired on Shine 103.1FM not later than 19/01/11. You MUST alert me at least two hours before its tx.

Failure to do this will result in 'F' grade.
