RADIO PROGRAMME CRITIQUE

I must admit that getting to find a similar format in BBC with what I am listening to in one of our local radio stations was not easy. For one I got all mixed up when it came to time. The time that I thought the program was supposed to be aired ,was not that time which was at 10 pm , so I ended up falling asleep instead. Anyhow I went back to the time difference and this time I got it right, but an easier option is that I get to listen to it online which is much more easier. So much for my adventure. Anyhow, I started listening to the different programs as from 6th of September and still going on.

I am listening to  the morning show in Hope Fm called activate and especially on Friday, this is because, it has a show within a show. This is to say that aside from it being a morning show,it (the program) hosts another show. This small show is called, "healthy living". The activate show is hosted by James Okumu, who is a graphic designer by profession and a pastor whereas the guest in the "healthy living " is a nutritionist by the name of Nancy Kiboro. The activate show airs every Monday to Friday from 5 am to 9am. In healthy living, they discus on issues that concerning our health and how we can adopt a healthy lifestyle.Healthy living starts from 7:30 to 8:00 am but at times when the topic they are discussing is so intense, they spill it over to the next hour.

In BBC, I listen to "Health check" show which is a 27 minute program, hosted by Claudia Hammond. She is a broadcaster, writer and an academic psychologist. She is also a part time lecturer at Boston University where she lectures in health and social psychology as well as an author.

This program airs three times in a week. On Monday and Tuesdays at 1:32 GMT and 4:32 pm local time and on Sundays it airs at 11:32 GMT and 2:32 am local time. I believe that the Monday and Tuesday shows are a re-run of the Sunday show.

This show deals with different health issues that affect people directly or indirectly. The first time I listened to it which was on the 6th of September, she was revisiting a story she had earlier done on SB a man who became blind at the age of 10 months and surgically regained his eye sight at the age of 52.

CHARACTERS
In the hope FM show, there are only two characters, James Okumu who is the presenter and Nancy Kiboro, who is the nutritionist. Listeners also call in to ask questions. In health check, Claudia is the main character as the presenter. She also has a guest and voicers, where people give out their views on that specific topic.

PROGRAM SOURCE
These two programs are local in their respective countries. Activate is a hope FM production produced and presented by James Okumu, whereas health check is produced by Marya Burger and Claudia Hammond and presented by Claudia

TARGET AUDIENCE
The target audience in healthy living at hope Fm- dealing with nutrition- is both men and women who want to live and maintain a healthy lifestyle, whereas in Claudia's show her target audience is varied depending with the topic she is discussing as well as people who deal with health matters like doctors or even students of medicine

These two shows are interesting especially the one on nutrition.

BBC AND CLASSIC 105 BREAKFAST SHOWS by Esther Neema

I have been listening to BBC world radio and Classic 105 breakfast shows with a view to compare and contrast the different kinds of presentation that exist in the world of radio.

On classic 105 radio, the morning breakfast show is more or less the same through out the week, while BBC does vary on a day to day basis. I picked a morning breakfast on the weekend with the Title BBC Weekend Africa weekend. My choice for the show was based on the fact that I am passionate about africa and of course would enjoy more than endure.

Though they are both morning breakfast shows, you can tell even without hearing the station jingle that you are listening to that chanel, and especially BBC

1.Content:
a)BBC When I was listening to the morning breakfast show on Africa, the content was very serious, more like talking about the problems of Africa. So of course it is a not so happy content which means even the atmosphere is not exactly that entertaining, it is more imformative
b)Classic 105 Wherease the content in BBC is very serious for the breakfast shiow on aAfrica, the content in Classic is extremely enetertainging with laughter and joke. you can almost feel vibration of life from the studio. It is more or less an issue of geneder and controversial topic.

2.Style:
a)BBC For most of the time I was listening to the show, there were interviews. Experts who had been part of projects in Africa kept speeking about the situation in the gorund. It was more of questio, answer and comment.
c)Classic 105 on the other has the interactive approach where the two host of the show are engaged in continous conversation, and also dialogue with audience in fom of call ins and such.

3.Presntation:
a)BBC: for the while that I was listening to the show there was no music other than jingles
b)CLASSIC 105 On this one there were varriety music as the show went on

In my opinion both these show are great but of course serve a very diferent targert audience. Personally I would choolse to listen to classsic105  because I can identify with it plus I found it much less offort listening to it.

RADIO PROGRAMME CRITIQUE

I had to change the BBC programme I was listening to as it didn’t have the same programme format with the KISS 100 programme I was listening to. So I am now reviewing and critiquing the Health Check Show and comparing it with the Big Breakfast Show at KISS 100.
HEALTH CHECK
Health Check is a talk show concerning health matters which affect the human race which is aired every Monday from 9.30-10.00 am on 93.9 BBC Network Africa. Its host is Claudia Hammond, a 39 years female broadcaster with the BBC World Service and BBC Radio 4. She is also an academic psychologist and author of the book “Emotional Rollercoaster-a journey through the science of feelings”. Claudia has been presenting this show for the past four years and from her presentation one can tell that she is very passionate about what she does. She is also well acquainted with the subject matter which is health and she is very credible as she is an academic psychologist. Claudia engages her interviewees in a debate concerning health in our world and on Monday the debate was- Which is more important in health, Staffing or Innovation. The debate was well presented and in a very professional manner.
Claudia Hammond has an authoritative, crisp and clear voice and her articulation is great. She adheres to the code of conduct of journalism as she is not biased in her discussions and she presents facts. She also allows each of her guests equal time to speak thus she doesn’t discriminate.

THE BIG BREAKFAST SHOW
The Big Breakfast is an interactive talk show that discusses current affairs in Kenya and the station brings in professionals who are interviewed concerning the specified issue of that day. This show is aired every weekday from 6.00-10.00 am on KISS 100. The hosts of this show are: Caroline Mutoko, Larry Asego and Mzee Jalango. Caroline Mutoko is a female presenter who although has a strong, clear voice and great articulation is very arrogant. She abuses politicians on air and she is never apologetic for that. Once she called our Kenyan politicians greedy thieves as she urged them to pay taxes.
Larry Asego is a male presenter who is also arrogant but has a strong voice. Together with his co presenter he abuses the politicians of Kenya and is never sorry for that.
Mzee Jalango is the comedian of the three presenters who speaks with a Luo accent and his work is to make everything a joke even if there are serious matters that are being discussed.
The Big Breakfast doesn’t have any particular topic of discussion, as the presenters just talk about what is current in Kenya and what affects Kenyans.
When I compare Health Check and Big Breakfast, which are both talk shows, there is a huge difference in terms of professionalism. As noted earlier, Health Check upholds to the Code of conduct of journalism unlike the Big Breakfast Show. The presenters of The Big Breakfast Show use offensive language on air and they have no respect of authority. A presenter like Jalango never entered a communication school and the content he gives on air is a joke. Although the presenters of Big Breakfast are arrogant, they educate Kenyans on various current issues and put politicians on their toes as they make sure that politicians fulfill their duty to the Kenyan citizens.

Kiss 100's The Big Breakfast and BBC's World Briefing_by Priscilla Muiruri

So for this week i was listening to world Briefing-BBC Morning at 7-9 am. This show is basically about stories from across the Uk, News, sports and exclusive interviews. The show is hosted by Victoria Derbyshire. It has many reportes represented in all the mentioned regions. I compared this show with the Big Breakfast which is aired on KISS 100 from 7-10am by Caroline Mutoko, Jalango and Larry Asego.I preferred listening to Big Breakfast as Compared to world Briefing because the issues being discussed on Big Breakfast affect me in a way and they are close home. The KISS 100 presenters discuss recent issues affecting Kenyans and they make their discussions lively as they have debates and comments from listeners. On the other hand,On World Briefing, its basically listening to world news for 2hours which is quite tiresome as they are no debates or listeners calling in to give their comments.
