                  AUDIOPRODUCTION CRITIQUES                              COM361
PROGRAME
Yaliyotendeka
Leo Africa
FORMAT
The format of the programe is Investigative reporting and is always live in the evening but repeated in the morning as pre-recorded.
Leo Africa covers News and that its format. It covers different types of news from socio-political to sports as well as weather.
DURATION
15 minutes. It airs from 8:00 to 8:15 pm on weekdays and on Saturdays on Radio citizen (106.7 Fm). However, I used to listen to it on Mondays or any other day when I wasn’t busy.
This programe also airs for 15 minutes and so it was easier for me to use it to compare with the Citizen’s one (yaliyotendeka). It also airs on weekdays from 8:45-9:00pm on 93.9 BBC Radio.
PRESENTER
Waweru Mburu
Ann Mawathe, Alex Muriithi & David Orston.
AGE & ROLES
Mburu is a 35 year-old guy and he is a very straight-forward person when it comes to his work and more so when the truth is compromised. He does investigate on issues that affect our society (Kenya) on daily bases and then gives out the results and report from various sources. Most of his findings comes from government press.
In this case I’m going to use Ann because I found it hard to critique all these guys. However, I found out that these presenters were doing their work interchangeably since I used to listen on Mondays but then I realized that their duties are not fixed to a certain day. They cover news about AFRICA as well as a little of international news ranging from political, socio-economic and sports. I was unable to get their ages but they sound very mature when they are reporting.
THEME
“Yaliyotendeka” which means what has happened focus on issues that affect our country (Kenya). It covers the emerging issues such as corruption in the society, political instability in our country, the development of infrastructure as well as socio-economic issues in our community. The theme revolves around politics and socio-economic activities. Waweru’s point here is more on motivating people to get to know their rights so that they can demand them.
Leo Africa basically means “today in Africa.” This programes focus moreless the same things in the African society but in News format. There is a great contrast between this programe and that of Waweru Mburu because as for him he calls citizen to take action while in this other case  news are objective. News coves different things that take place in Africa ranging from politics, socio-economic  and sports as well as other cultural activities. To sum it up the theme revolves around development of AFRICA.
STEREOTYPES
The presenters always paints the government as being unfair to its Citizens since it does not care about the local citizen but instead the leaders in big positions take it as an opportunity to enrich themselves while forgetting the development of the country. To him,Waweru says that most of government officials are greedy. However, he emphasizes that some leaders are quite good but are denied the chance to bring change in the country.
The programe has got some biases since sometimes it brings African continent as being unable and poor of which I think is not the case. It shows how we as Africans are politically unstable. I think Africans have come from far and  the only way of making them to develop their societies is by appreciating they have done so far. Africans are people who have got brains and so they can do something that can bring change even more than the west can do.
ORIGINALITY
I think the idea of the programe is original because what it covers is what affects us directly in our daily life as Kenya. The programe focus on Kenyan citizens and this is what need for them to grow and develop the country.
I don’t think the idea of this programe is as original because it covers issues affecting Africans while bringing out Africa as unable continent full of problems. I do think that we have enough African programes which are for important. There are many stations in Africa which can keep on updating us and this would bring more impact compared to BBC’s Leo Africa.
PROGRAME SOURCE
“Yaliyotendeka” is produced by Waweru Mburu  under courtesy of Royal Media Services and its Local
Leo Africa is produced by Ann Mawathe under courtesy of BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation). The programe is Regional.
PRODUCTION VALUES
The audio is very clear and of quality. Waweru uses tonal variations which spices up the programe and one is left demanding for more. In addition, he uses music which is relevant to the topic of the day. The song always has the same theme with the issue and this is used to enforce or put message across in clear and precise way thus making people to conceptualize everything. Waweru Mburu is an eloquent speaker and more to that he has good writing skills which allow continuity of the programe thus making it admirable and interesting to listen.
The audio is of good quality and is very clear. However, they don’t use music but use instrumentals as linkages between different news segments. In this news programe is voxpox from different places as usual and reporters from different places also are involved. The different between this programe (Leo Africa) and (yaliyotendeka) is that many people are involved in conveying the message while Waweru is the only presenter of yaliyotendeka. Another thing that this programe embraces is the use of modern technology since reporters are very far from the station and so they use satellite to send vox pox or when reporting live.
WORLDVIEW
Materialism/Christian:the
progame highlights on how people are greedy and more concerned with grabbing thus forgetting the whole issue of developing the society to make it a better place to live. On side of Christianity the producer talks of God and he has for several time quoted “I wish fire would come from heaven to rain on the Kenyan parliament.” This demonstrates that he know God has power and so the members of parliament should fear God in whatever they are doing in the parliament.
Materialism: this programe also focus since politics, socio-economic activities bring about materialism. The issue of development is always influenced by materialism or how people acquire things in the society. However, they have never mentioned how the western take all natural resources while living Africa undeveloped.

Other news included the NCIC (National Cohesion and Integration commission) efforts to to cub hate speech before, during and after campaigns of the proposed constitution which was finally voted in by Kenyans.
SOUND
The sound is well catered for and the transition of vocals and the song remains very smooth. His tonal variation is also credible and creates interest to the listener.
The transition of vocals and the voxpox is well done. There is the usage of instrumentals / station jingle to link different audios such as sports and economic issues.
13th Sep  2010
Talks about the Human Rights commission of Kenya and how they accuse William Ruto of post election chaos which left many people dead in the Rift valley. He says that they should not declare him guilt of the offence but should wait until the court rulings are done to justify the truth.            SOUND: The use of song makes the programe interesting as it adds value to what he says. There is no distortion of sound or any audio in the studio. The transitions are done smoothly.
The news focused on appreciation of talents in Africa ranging from drama to journalism. They got audio of a reporter from Nigeria where people celebrated their culture together with the talents of many young men from the whole of Africa. Other news were about the the economic development of Rwanda as wellas that of DRC (Democratic republic of congo). The emphases was that Rwanda was experiencing a drastic growth but corruption was a big hindrance to their success as a country.             SOUND: The use of microphone is done in a good way as there is no popping of sound. There is also the use of station jingle before and towards the end of the news.
20th  Sep   2010
Waweru talks on Al-bashir. He argues that the international community should not blame  Kenyans for not arresting Mr.  Al-bashir since he was being blamed of  killing a lot of people in southern Sudan. He says that the ICC should go a head and get hold of Al-bashir and should not ask Kenya to execute their duties at any one time. He said if Kenya would arrest him it could create a lot of tension between this country and Sudan.
Leo Africa news also talked of Al-bashir and they blamed Kenya of not arresting him. Moses Wetangula the minster for foreign affairs said that Al-bashir was invited to share with other leaders in Kenya during the promulgation of our constitution which took place on 27th August. News on Uganda as led by David orston. They speak of the opposition that Museveni is facing from Joseph Kony who once a commander in Ugandan military. Others news are about the African cup of nations. They say Africa has always been behind in football and this is the high time to change the way we do our things. Finally, they touch on international news about the Chinese economy.
PRODUCTION VALUES
There is mood change due to use a song that reinforces the message. The sound levels are good and the use microphone is also excellent.
The Script is well written and executed and you can get to know it from the flow of the message delivery and continuity.
Programme is however passive as there are no people invited give their views.

The transitions are well executed too. The use of station jingle is employed and this shows linkage of different stories. There are no songs used since these are news and they cover a wider area. The mic distance is well observed since the sound is clear and there is no distortion.

  1. Adams, Your critique is quite incisive and detailed though a 'hard read'. Consider changing your colour scheme.

What do you consider to be the most outstamding difference/similarity between the two shows?
